Alternative Routes

A day of celebration for the diverse culture and creativity of Te Aro

The first Alternative Routes festival took place on March 15, 2003, featuring 3 stages of original live music and not a DJ in sight. The day kicked off in the morning with market stalls and acoustic entertainment in Tonks Ave.

roots'n'rock stageThe roots and rock stage kicked off mid-afternoon in Thistle Hall with the ghetto jazz of Otautahi's Strip-side pranksters CBD Reality Testing Unit. After a such a slow start it was a delight to see the cream of Pooneke's reggae, dub, funk and head down four-to-the-floor rock talent including Picture, Kamahi, Project, Weave, the Offbeats, Rainbow Country,Tommy and a lovely jazzy closing set from Dirty Republic.

punk'n'alternative stage The punk and alternative stage started off strong in the pleasant environs of sunny Kensington Gardens but just as Dead Viscious were taking the stage, noise control warnings forced it move to the 'corridor from Aliens' atmosphere of the Underground Arts venue. A glorious, maggot-ridden buffet of Wellington munterdom (scroll down) including the Carrnys, School of Meat, Backyard Burial, If I Had a Gun, Tried for Treason and many others.

By the time the sun went down the assembled masses were stuffed full of excellent hangi, even the vegans!
By this time the acoustic stage was also going strong with a revolving door crew of keen musos swapping from instrument to microphone and jamming late into the pm.
